College of Liberal Arts Honors Three Outstanding Alumni
with Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award
 

Three alumni of the College of Liberal Arts at Texas State University-San Marcos were honored with the College’s 2016 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award Saturday, April 9. The award, which has been given since 2008, recognizes the accomplishments of alumni in their professions and communities.

The honorees included:

Dr. Fenda AkiwumiDr. Fenda Akiwumi, PhD Geography, 2006
Dr. Akiwumi earned her PHD in Geography from Texas State University in 2006.  She is currently Associate Professor at the University of South Florida. Dr. Akiwumi has served as chair of the UNESCO International Hydrological Program (IHP) Expert Advisory Group on Water and Cultural Diversity and has published a highly regarded book and papers in top-tier academic journals. Dr. Akiwumi is known internationally as an expert in water resources and mining in West Africa.
 
 
Barney KnightMr. Barney Knight, MPA Political Science, 1980
Barney Knight earned his MPA in Political Science from Texas State University in 1980. Mr. Knight has 16 years of experience as City Manager with the cities of Temple and Austin and 29 years as a licensed attorney in the State of Texas. He is currently practicing at Knight & Partners in Austin, Texas. Mr. Knight served as President of the Southwest Texas State University Public Administration Alumni Association (1990-1994). He has received many awards and recognition over his career including, most recently, Distinguished Alumnus, Masters of Public Administration, Texas State University, 2014.
 
Ms. Marise McDermott-GrizzardMs. Marise McDermott-Grizzard, MFA English, 1996
Marise McDermott graduated from Texas State University with an MFA in English in 1996. McDermott is the President and CEO of the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas. She is currently overseeing a $100 million dollar, 176,000 square-foot campus expansion due for completion in 2018.  Ms. McDermott has over 26 years of experience in cultural arts. She is founding Chair of Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio and also serves on the San Antonio River Oversight Committee, Midtown/Brackenridge TIRZ Board, and the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Commission.
