John Crain, President of the Summerlee Foundation of Dallas, received a master's degree in History from Texas State, where he served as a graduate assistant and instructor in the Department of History.  He obtained an undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin, and he holds a certificate in arts administration from Harvard University and a certificate in museum management from the University of California at Berkeley.

Before becoming President of the Summerlee Foundation, Mr. Crain served as the foundation's Vice President and Program Director for Texas History. Previously, he served as Director of the Dallas Historical Society and as Director of the Star of the Republic Museum at Washington-on-the-Brazos. 

Mr. Crain has served as President of the Texas State Historical Association and of the Texas Map Society.  He has also held leadership roles in the Council on Foundations, the Conference of Southwest Foundations, and the Texas Association of Museums.  He has been President of the Friends of the Governor’s Mansion since 2009, and he serves as an ex-officio member of the Sixth Floor Museum and as a member of the advisory board of the Clements Center at Southern Methodist University.  He has also been elected to membership in the Philosophical Society of Texas.
