March 19: Documentary film Buffalo Soldier Mutiny to be shown

The documentary film Buffalo Soldier Mutiny—about the early 20th-century trials of black troops who refused to submit to Jim Crow laws in the Houston area—will be shown 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, in Flowers Hall 341.

For more than a half-century, the Houston Mutiny and Courts Martial trial of 1917-1918 were kept sealed by the U.S. Government. Stemming from the race riots occasioned by the refusal of black troops known as “Buffalo Soldiers” to submit to Jim Crow laws in the Houston area, the confrontation and subsequent trial cost more than 30 people their lives and influenced U.S. Army attitudes toward African American servicemen. This 78-minute documentary explores the circumstances surrounding the events to reveal one of the 20th century’s great American tragedies.

The film, sponsored by the Department of History, is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be offered after the movie.
