College's growth spurs Sociology Department's
move to Derrick Hall

February 2007 — In January, the Sociology Department moved from the Evans Liberal Arts Building to larger space across the Quad in Derrick Hall. The Department’s administrative office, its faculty and student offices, and most of its classrooms are now located in Derrick. A few classrooms are still located in Evans Liberal Arts (see Department of Sociology Office Locations below). The Department’s vacated space in Evans will be used by the Departments of Anthropology and Political Science.

"The growth of faculty and students in the College of Liberal Arts and the growing complexity of its programs necessitate that we find new space," said Dr. Ann Marie Ellis, College of Liberal Arts Dean.  Since 1996, the number of fulltime equivalent faculty in the College has increased 42 percent and the number of semester credit hours they teach has increased 27 percent.  The number of students majoring in Liberal Arts has increased from 3,500 in 1996 to 5,122 in 2006.

This semester, the Sociology Department has enrolled nearly 3,300 students in 62 classes. The Department has 20 faculty members and more than 350 majors. “We’re large for a Sociology department,” said Department Chair Dr. Susan Day.

“We have a great deal more space now,” said Department Chair Dr. Susan Day. “We have individual suites for the Internship Program, considerable space for the statistics tutoring program, and a student lounge that will open soon. And, the classrooms have a better arrangement: they’re large yet intimate.

“We have a large conference room, a new faculty lounge, and our faculty offices are almost twice as large as the old offices,” Dr. Day continued. “The faculty painted their own offices, and there’s been competition over who has the classiest office.”

The statistics tutoring facility, which can accommodate groups and individuals, is important to the Sociology Department because the Department teaches statistics courses to as many as 560 students per semester, including students from other departments. “We have three tutors, and anyone in our classes can take advantage of the tutoring,” Dr. Day said (see the tutoring program’s hours of operation).
