Each summer, Liberal Arts faculty teach more than 50 courses in study abroad programs offered in 10 foreign countries, and new and exciting courses are added each year. Read an

Students are embedded in Belize culture as they learn archaeological field methods and research strategies. They excavate ancient Maya ruins at Cahal Pech, where they make significant discoveries that improve our knowledge of the Maya's history. Students recently uncovered one of the earliest Maya burials on record, dating from approximately 1000 B.C., and artifacts uncovered by students are on display in the Belize National Museum.

Learning Latin American business at the hub—

Quito, Ecuador is a major international hub in the world of business. Students are immersed, not only in the Spanish language, but in the Ecuadorian business culture through visits to local businesses and guest lectures by local business leaders. Students will can take courses in Business Spanish; Spanish Culture, Language and Literature; and International Business in Latin America.

Students study on the campus of Christ Church University in Canterbury, with faculty from Texas State. The course offerings, which vary from year to year, can include courses in Anthropology, English, History, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Social Work, Business, Art, and more. Students take excursions to such places as Stonehenge, the Isle of Wight, Salisbury Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the London Museum and Imperial War Museum, Leeds Castle, Buckingham Palace, and the estates of Charles Darwin and Winston Churchill. Weekends are free for travel to places such as Scotland and Paris.

In the spirit of the old Grand Tour, students visit Pompeii, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Venice, Milan, St. Moritz, Zurich, Bern, and Paris. Through training in regional, physical, and human geography, they learn to become travelers rather than tourists by researching, mapping, and writing about the historical and geographic significance of the sites they visit.

This total immersion program helps students to become proficient in French as they develop an understanding of French culture and values. Courses are taught by faculty in the University of Picardie Jules Verne. Program highlights include a visit to Normandy cemeteries, where students see the white crosses of 5,000 American and German soldiers who died there in WWII. Other highlights include lessons in French cooking, a visit to Paris, sidewalk cafe culture, and more.

Texas State students live with German host-students in their homes. Courses, which vary each year, can be taken in fields such as writing, literature, geographic field study, and independent study. For example, in a course titled “The Individual and the State: What would I have done?” students examined 20th century Germany through literature and memoirs, from post World War I through reunification. Excursions can include visits to the homes of the writers Goethe and Schiller, and the concentration camp of Buchenwald. Students also take excursions to places such as Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Weimar, the North Sea, and Hamlin, home of the Pied Piper.

Through courses in travel writing, Irish culture and literature, and Irish biography and autobiography, students expand their knowledge of the Irish and improve their writing skills. Recently, students read and saw a performance of a play by the Irish author J.M. Synge. They examined the Irish “mystique” created by Synge’s work and the effect of the landscape on the Irish identity. Students take group and individual excursions to places such as Blarney Castle, the Irish coast, the Ring of Kerry, Skellig Michael, Kenmare, Gougane Barra, Dublin, and Galway.

In this cultural immersion program, students learn Italian as they explore Florentine life—its art, history, gastronomy, and everyday habits. In the past, students have attended a Papal audience at the Vatican in Rome and visited famous Roman landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum, and Michelangelo’s David.

Students learn Japanese language while living with a host family in Nagoya, located in the heart of Central Japan. With a population of 2.15 million, Nagoya is one of Japan's major cities, and an important industrial and cultural center. Students can take excursions to the Nagoya Castle, famous for the golden dolphins adorning its rooftop. Other destinations include Ise Bay, Nobi Plane, and Kiso River.

In this cultural immersion program, students live with a Mexican family for eight weeks, enhancing their knowledge and skills for bilingual and cultural practice. Students study Spanish and Mexican history at Kulkulcan, a first-rate language school, and learn about social services in Mexico by visiting social service agencies, orphanages, and shelter homes. The experience prepares students to work with Mexican populations in the U.S.

Students have the opportunity to learn Spanish and to study Mexican literature and culture at the Guadalajara campus of the acclaimed Tecnológico de Monterrey System. Guadalajara, the capital city of the state of Jalisco and Mexico's second most populated city, is known as Mexico's Silicon Valley. Also known as La Perla del Occidente (Pearl of the West), Guadalajara is the birthplace of mariachi music and charreadas (a type of rodeo). The city is home to the popular soccer team Chivas Rayadas and to the Hospicio Cabañas, one of the oldest and largest hospital complexes in Latin America and a World Heritage Site. A series of monumental frescoes by José Clemente Orozco decorate the interior of the Hospicio Cabañas, including one of Orozco's best-known works, the allegory of

Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico May 17 - Aug. 3, 2008

This program, to train ethnographic researchers, enables 10 undergraduate students from Texas State and other institutions to spend nine weeks living with a Maya family in Tulum, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The program, offered through Texas State's Department of Anthropology, is sponsored by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Students must commit to taking courses and doing other work both before and after the summer in Tulum, and they will publish their research results at the end of the program.

In one of Spain's most dynamic cities, students will learn how American Government compares to Spanish governments. Students experience total immersion in the Spanish way of life as they study Spanish language, culture, and literature at a private university in the medieval city of Valladolid. Because it is possible to walk most places in Valladolid, the city’s pace is relaxed, and Texas State students find it easy to engage local Spaniards in conversation. From Valladolid, students enjoy excursions to other parts of Spain, including Córdoba, Gibraltar, Granada, Madrid, Peñafiel, Salamanca, San Sebastián, Segovia, and Toledo.
