Highlights of Liberal Arts Faculty Achievement 2004

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2004, Liberal Arts faculty received dozens of prestigious national awards for teaching, publication, and achievement. Faculty received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts to write poetry, from the National Endowment for the Humanities to write political history, and from the Fulbright program to teach in other countries. Other faculty awards and recognitions came from organizations including Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, the Texas Institute of Letters, the Lannan Literary Prize, the National Book Critics Circle, the Gulf Coast Fiction Prize, the Raymond Carver Award, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the Association of American Geographers, the National Science Foundation, William and Mary College, the Republic of Korea, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Southwestern Political Science Association, and Psi Chi National Council Southwestern Region.

Among their outstanding honors:

  • 27 faculty won national, state, and local awards for outstanding teaching and service.
  • 6 faculty won national and regional literary prizes
  • 7 faculty won national prizes for outstanding scholarship
  • 2 faculty received the Texas State University Presidential Award for Excellence

Among their other accomplishments, faculty:

  • published 26 books and 166 book chapters, refereed articles, essays, stories, poems, and other works
  • gave 295 scholarly papers, presentations, and readings at national, regional and state conferences
  • held 72 external grants and contracts totaling $7.66 million
  • held leadership positions in 43 international, national, and regional organizations
  • held leadership positions in 27 state and local organizations
  • served on 47 national or regional editorial boards or served as editors for 43 journals and book series
  • served as mentors for 61 graduate students who presented papers or other published works at academic meetings or who won awards
  • served as mentors for 27 undergraduate students who presented papers or other published works at academic meetings or who won awards
