Highlights of Liberal Arts Faculty Achievement 2005
From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2005, Liberal Arts faculty received dozens of prestigious national awards for teaching, publication, and achievement. Faculty received awards from Library Journal for Best Reference book and Best Poetry Book, and two were finalists for the Pirate's Alley William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Prize. Faculty received the Distinguished Teaching Award and the Humanities Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities, a Fulbright lectureship to the Slovak Republic, and a research excellence award from the Association of American Geographers. Other faculty awards and recognitions came from organizations including Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Who's Who of American Women, the Texas Institute of Letters, the PEN American Center, the Geology Society of America, the International Association of Chinese Professionals in Geographic Information Sciences, and Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology.
Among their honors:
* 23 faculty won national, state, and local awards for outstanding teaching and service
* 2 faculty won national and regional literary prizes
* 27 faculty won national prizes for outstanding scholarship
* 3 faculty received the Texas State University Presidential Award for Excellence
Among their other accomplishments, faculty:

* gave 313 scholarly papers, presentations, and readings at national, regional and state conferences
* held 85 external grants and contracts totaling $7.1 million
* served as editors or editorial board members of 84 scholarly journals
* served as mentors for 92 graduate students who presented papers or other published works at academic meetings or who won awards
