Highlights of Liberal Arts Faculty Achievement 2003

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2003, Liberal Arts faculty received dozens of prestigious national awards for teaching, publication, and achievement from organizations including the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Council for Geographic Education, the Fulbright Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mosher Institute for Defense Studies, the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation, the Texas Institute of Letters, the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the Children’s Literature Association, the National Communication Association, and Who’s Who in America.
Among their outstanding accomplishments:

• 13 faculty received awards for teaching
• 34 faculty held leadership positions in 40 international, national, and regional organizations
• 18 faculty held leadership positions in 18 state and local organizations
• 2 faculty received the Texas State University Presidential Award for Excellence
• 24 faculty published books
• 94 faculty published 206 book chapters, refereed articles, essays, poems and short stories
• 129 faculty gave 284 scholarly papers, presentations, and readings at international, national and regional conferences
• 37 faculty held 55 external grants and contracts totaling $4.4 million; average award was $80,000
• 8 faculty edited scholarly journals
• 24 faculty served on national and regional editorial boards; 15 served as officers
• 48 faculty edited or served on the boards for 72 journals or book series
• 33 faculty served as mentors for 87 graduate students who presented papers or other published works at academic meetings or who won awards
• 10 faculty served as mentors for 17 undergraduate students who presented papers or other published works at academic meetings or who won awards
