Internships: Political Science

Bachelor of Political Science Internships—POSI 4380 and POSI 4680

POSI 4380 awards 3 hours of credit to students who work in a part-time internship (240 hours) and write a research paper.  POSI 4680, a full-time internship, awards 6 hours of credit for 480 hours of work.  Students can enroll in the courses if they have a 2.5 GPA overall and a 3.0 GPA in Political Science, plus 12 hours of coursework in Political Science.

The internship coordinator will help students find internships if they do not already have one upon enrolling in the course. Most internships are held off-campus. Internships give students the opportunity to do substantive work, including constituent relations, policy research, campaign research, event planning, assisting with polling, attending meetings and hearings, and writing press releases.  The majority of interns work in the Texas Legislature, usually in the legislative office of a Texas House member.  Interns are also placed in a wide variety of organizations, including the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the Office of the Governor, various county commissioners’ offices, interest groups’ offices, Texas state party organizations, political consulting firms. Many Political Science majors have been awarded full-time paid internships in competitive statewide programs, including the Moreno-Rangel Legislative Intern Program and the Speaker’s Internship Program. Interns often obtain employment through their internship and move into responsible positions.
