Student Profile: Leon Kincy
Using GIS to map the delivery of services to disabled persons
After finishing a
master’s degree in Applied Geography at Texas State, Leon Kincy hopes to obtain a PhD in Geography and teach at the college level. To put himself through school, he works as a computer network administrator for the Texas Department of Public Safety, and he hopes to find a new job using his skills in Geographic Information Science (GIS).
To become eligible for jobs in GIS, Leon did an internship with the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, using GIS to make maps showing where the Department’s clientele live and work and where the Department’s services are concentrated. The Department provides vocational rehabilitation and training in independent living to persons with physical disabilities, and it is using Leon’s maps to match its services to its clientele.
Describing the value of his internship, Leon said, “I got to use the skills I learned in my master’s degree program and to measure my ability in using them in the workplace,” he said. He pointed out that he was able to do well in his internship because his master’s program has provided comprehensive and rigorous training in areas such as GIS, remote sensing, and writing—all skills that he expects to use in a new job.
