4. Thanks: To Ann Friou for constructing links on the Liberal Arts web site for grade appeals procedures, the honor code, and the statement of civil behavior.

5. Information Session with Human Resources Representatives (Mr. John McBride, Mr. Floyd Quinn, and Ms. Michelle Moritz) (HO)

Representatives from Human Resources discussed upcoming initiatives including: 1) a new comprehensive “work life” program (available March 1), which will offer an array of support services (e.g. legal, financial, counseling, employment) for faculty, staff, and household members; 2) an intensive training course for administrative assistants to be developed in the coming year; 3) an electronic PCR processing system to be available by year’s end; and 4) changes to the UPPS governing procedures for contracting temporary employees.

Mr. McBride distributed an organizational chart for the office of Human Resources. Chairs were reminded to refer new faculty to HR during their first 30 days of employment to register for benefits, and to recommend faculty considering retirement to consult with HR representatives regarding options for retirement planning. Council members were asked to encourage faculty to complete job audit customer satisfaction surveys, which will be distributed online. HR representatives noted that various courses, including SAP training, are listed on the HR web site.

Dean Ellis thanked Mr. McBride, Mr. Quinn, and Ms. Moritz for their time and very useful information.

6. Liberal Arts Career Week (HO)

Ms. Jennifer Grant and Mr. Chris Jones distributed a hand-out and discussed the first annual career week designed for Liberal Arts students (February 8–11). Events include sessions addressing careers in writing, psychology, and law, as well as a presentation (hosted by Apple Computers) discussing career opportunities for Liberal Arts graduates in the technology industry. Students will also receive advice and practice with job interviews. Chairs and directors are asked to help publicize these events to faculty and students.

Apple Computers hopes to hire 100-125 Texas State undergraduates to work part-time in tech support. Chairs, directors, administrative assistants, and internship directors are invited to attend a luncheon with Apple representatives on February 11 to learn about the new “Apple Partnership” between Apple and Texas State. Chairs should notify Jennifer Grant with names of attendees.

Dean Ellis thanked Ms. Grant and Mr. Jones for their work to promote careers for Liberal Arts graduates.

7. Managing the 3-year Credit for Merit

Dean Ellis reminded chairs that all departments should have a faculty-evaluation policy that considers performance of faculty across a three-year period.

8. Muir Mentoring Award

Dean Ellis asked chairs to encourage nominations from their departments for the Muir Mentoring Award.

Around the Table:

Dean Ellis announced that Emily Edwards will temporarily replace Pat Heath, who is retiring.

Nancy Grayson announced that the Graduate College has turned over processing of Graduate College scholarship applications to Liberal Arts. Dr. Grayson and Kathy Scott will handle this process. Scholarship deadline is March 1.

Council members discussed ongoing difficulties with the FARS system and expressed thanks to Marc Turner for all his efforts to improve the system. Bob Fischer and Mike Hennessy will discuss with Marc Turner possible solutions to continuing problems with FARS.

Britt Bousman announced that all computing proposals have been submitted to the Academic Computing Committee. He asked chairs to remind faculty about the several grant workshops that he will offer this semester. (See reminders.)

Shirley Ogletree asked for input from chairs on how departments structure their training courses for graduate TAs and IAs. Various models were discussed.

Dean Ellis asked chairs for the topics covered in GTA and GIA training courses. Some topics mentioned by chairs: how to conduct a writing workshop; grading essays; planning syllabi; TRACS training; designing assignments; using classroom media equipment.

Dean Ellis responded to questions from chairs that there is still no word regarding requests for staff positions.

The meeting was adjourned.
