1. Approval of minutes:
Minutes of the Liberal Arts Council meeting of 10 October were unanimously approved.
2. Representatives from the Office of Sponsored Programs:
Director Scott Erwin and associate director Kay Beauchamp conducted a research roundtable to answer questions and receive input from Council members regarding their services. Several topics were discussed, including accounting for grant participation of non-PIs, the process for selecting limited-submission proposals, assistance in locating funding opportunities for humanities projects, and improved efficiency in effort reporting.
3. 2013-14 Common Experience:
Joe Meyer, chair of the 2013-14 Common Experience committee, distributed a hand-out and discussed next year’s theme: Exploring the Realities of Mental Health and Mental Illness. He updated Council members on the committee’s progress in selecting a central text and keynote speaker, and asked chairs to encourage faculty participation in events related to the topic. Dr. Grayson noted that academic advisors should also be included in events where appropriate. Those interested in participating should contact Joe Meyer (jm01). He will send electronic materials to the Dean’s office for distribution.
4. CAD update:
Dean Hennessy reviewed
· the proposed University budget for the next fiscal year
· the University’s legislative priorities, including increased formula funding, Hazelwood assistance, and new construction requests
· the deadline for new faculty to utilize start-up funds
· proposed increases in tuition
· guidelines for compensating APR reviewers
Council members expressed concerns about the current limits on compensation for APR reviewers.
5. FARRS / Faculty Bibliography:
Dr. Bousman distributed and reviewed 2011 faculty research statistics, which were collected from FARRS reports and published in the yearly Liberal Arts Bibliography. He also provided a list of required information to assist faculty in completing this year’s FARRS reports. Dr. Brittain suggested that this list accompany the email to be sent to faculty at the beginning of the upcoming FARRS reporting cycle.
6. Other business:
Lucy Harney confirmed with chairs the status of learning outcomes reports for each department/program. Dr. Grayson thanked chairs for forwarding the names of prestigious student awards in Liberal Arts disciplines, and noted that she will soon be requesting members for scholarship committees. Britt Bousman distributed a print-out of the home page of the new Human Resources PI web site available for grant managers.
