1.  Approve minutes (4/16/14):

Members unanimously approved the LAC minutes from 16 April 2014.

2.  Honoring Vicki Brittain and Vince Luizzi:

Vicki Brittain and Vince Luizzi were honored with gifts and refreshments for their many years of service as chairs. They will both return to faculty after this semester. Vicki chaired the Department of Political Science for 11 years, and Vince chaired the Department of Philosophy for 32 years.

3.  Fall College meeting:

Dean Hennessy discussed with Council members possible dates and times for the fall 2014 meeting for the College of Liberal Arts. He will look into potential space conflicts and update Council members on the schedule.

4.  Student Fulbrights:

Lucy Harney asked chairs to encourage top students to apply for Fulbright grants. Ideal applicants should have an overall GPA of at least 3.8. They must also be US citizens and have obtained their degrees by the dates of the grant. Intermediate language skills are generally required for grants in non-English-speaking countries. Interested students should contact campus Fulbright advisor, Dr. Valentina Glajar (vg10).

5.  LA representatives to General Education Council:

Dean Hennessy and Council members agreed to recommend Lucy Harney for a renewed term on the General Education Council for 2014-2015, and to recommend Nancy Wilson, who will replace Sue Beebe as coordinator of lower-division studies in English, to take Sue’s place on the Council. Sue will retire at the end of the current semester. Ted Hindson and Jim Garber will continue as LA alternates for the General Education Council.

6.  Assessment:

Lucy Harney discussed the current cycle of learning outcomes reporting with Council members. She noted that two new administrative outcomes have been added to each program report. She will send a message with detailed instructions for the reporting process, including deadlines, a link to the academic assessment web site, and a template to serve as a guide in report preparation.

7.  CAD update:

      Dean Hennessy briefed Council members on the CAD meeting of 4/22. Issues included:

  • CAD discussions regarding the new “N” grade
  • classroom utilization update and various class scheduling options
  • the induction (4/3) of Texas State’s first student class of Phi Kappa Phi members
  • fall enrollment updates
  • graduate applications still awaiting departmental approval. Chairs/directors are encouraged to work with graduate directors to move quickly on these application decisions.

8.  Other business:

The 8th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference is underway (April 23-25).
