Agenda Items:


Dean Brennan announced Dennis Dunn’s retirement in August 2018.  Paul Hart introduced as his successor. 


The minutes from unanimously approved on a motion by Dr. Harney and a second by Dr. Grasso.


Dr. Anderson introduced proposed changes to four CDGS minors, and Dr. Kelemen seconded.  The vote was unanimous in favor of the changes for the four minors. 


Dean Brennan indicated that catalog edits for Math requirements will be requested soon.  Departments must clarify current wording.  Ms. Anderson offered more specific wording as an alternative to “1315 or higher.” Alternative “alternative” wordings were discussed.  Ms. Anderson will provide wording for chairs to insert in the catalog. 


Dr. Hanks noted that the Justice Department has obligated departments to provide closed captioning for classroom and website films when films do not include it.  YouTube and recorded events are subject to this requirement as are Philosophy Department dialogues.  Dr. Hanks noted that University funding for this obligation would be desirable.   (Dr. Roundtree noted that YouTube has a captioning program for uploaded film.)  Dr. Kelemen said that the on-campus cost is $1 per hour versus a free, but inaccurate, transcription process.  Dr. Brennan will take these issues to CAD.  Chairs are asked to send questions about this issue to Dean Brennan.  It was noted that information about this issue seems to be emerging piecemeal.  Dr. Brunson asked whether faculty members could access a captioning program to do their own captioning.


Dr. Kelemen indicated that he would become the Chair of the Council of Chairs in January.


Cad update:


Dean Brennan indicated that the League of Women Voters’ requests assistance in registering students to vote.  Departments can facilitate the process by allowing faculty or staff to become deputized registrars who can register students.  Dr. Anderson noted that the Administrative Assistant for the Center for Diversity and Gender Studies, Alyssa Garza, is a registrar and does register voters.


Dean Brennan indicated that summer budgets will require justifications for administrative positions.  Budgets will be sent out earlier than they were last year.  Departments can pay stipends instead of salaries.  Offering graduate classes will also be seen favorably. Summer 2018 begins the counting year.


There is a new diversity plan.  The President and the Provost will present this plan on 11.30.17 at 2 p.m. in Reed Parr.


Dean Brennan will have a meeting of graduate directors in the spring.


Dean Brennan will discuss merit with chairs.  


Around the table

Dr. Roundtree announced that she has created Twitter and Instagram accounts for the College.  She asked chairs and directors to send their publications and events to her to be publicized.  The handles for all are txstatecola.


Dr. Murphy reminded 4:45-6:30 lecture by History's Fulbright professor. 

Dr. Lochman announced Susan Hansen’s retirement celebration on 12.4.17 at 3:30 in FH 313.
